Outreach

We are very proud of our members who volunteer not only at the center but throughout the community.  Below are some of the organizations for which they volunteer their time or donations.

ST. JOHN'S SOUP KITCHEN provides food to the homeless or others in need of a warm meal on the fifth Thursday of the month.  The program is run by the Upper Merion Womens Club.  They accept donations of food for special meals they prepare and serve at the St. John's Church in Norristown.  A collection box will be placed on the table outside of the lounge with a list of food donations they need.  You can also check the newsletter to see what specific food items have been requested for the month.

UPPER MERION EMERGENCY AID provides food for families in need within our community.  More families are in need than ever before.  Requests are for donations of : BOXED POTATOES (MASHED, SCALLOPED, AU GRATIN, ETC.) BOXED MACARONI AND CHEESE AND BOXED STUFFING, TURKEY GRAVEY, SPAGHETTI SAUCE, CHICKEN BROTH AND SOUP, CANNED PASTA (CHEF BOYARDEE), CANNED TUNA AND FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY, CEREAL AND LAUNDRY DETERGENT.   Toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and soap are also appreciated.   Our collection box is outside of the lounge.  Thank you to those who have donated!

SHOEBOX RECYCLING: In partnership with Community Recycling, we are collecting gently used shoes for men, women and children around the glove that are suitable for re-use. This program has other benefits as well. Every box we fill will raise funds for the center and there will be fewer shoes in a landfill which normally receives over 300 million pairs of shoes each year. So start cleaning out your closets and look under your bed for gently used shoes and please remember that every pair you recycle means extra funds for us.

KNITTERS WANTED: As you may or may not know, our knitting group donates knitted caps to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.  The hats are for the preemie babies to keep their tiny bodies warm.  We are in need of some additional volunteers to help knit the hats.  If you can knit and would like to help out, please stop in the office and give your name.  The pattern will be supplied to you and you can join the group here at the Center on Tuesday’s at 1:00 PM or you can do your knitting at home.

PUT BOOKS IN THE HANDS OF CHILDREN WHO NEED THEM. We collect new or gently used childrens' books for  kindergarten through fourth grade children at Bridgeport Elementary School.  Our donations have been a big hit with the kids; they really enjoy receiving the books and getting to keep them for their own.  Check out the bulletin board and read some of the thank you notes from the kids.  The collection box sits under the bulletin board.  Thank you to those who have given!

PROJECT LINUS provides afghans for chilren who are seriously ill or traumatized.  Our members volunteer to knit or crochet squares for these afghans in association with the "Hearts and Hands" ladies group at Good Shepherds Church who put the squares together to form the afghans.  Our participating members are doing a great job for a very good cause.
